Micron Agritech launches rapid parasite test kit after investors raise €1.5 million

Micron Agritech is a big step closer to launching its rapid parasite test kit after raising €1.5 million from investors. The company said it plans to expand production soon.

The icron kit enables farmers and veterinarians to test animals for parasites on site using their mobile phones.

The user collects a sample, prepares it in a series of steps, and then automatically analyzes it through an app on your phone.

The samples are analyzed by machine learning, with the user receiving the results within minutes.

This speed enables the farmer to decide in real time whether an animal needs to be medicated or not. This saves both drugs and money and reduces the potential for resistance development on farms.
Micron Agritech was founded in 2019 by Sean Smith, Daniel Izquierdo, Tara McElligott and Jose Lopez while they were students at Technological University Dublin.

In its first round of funding, the Dublin-based startup raised €500,000 in seed capital to turn its concept into a working project.

Late last year, the company signed up its Micron kit for the VetQAS proficiency test, the first non-lab to do so.

Laboratories are required to be within three standard deviations of accuracy for proficiency testing. When tested in December, the Micron kit was accurate to within one error.

The company said it is confident that this latest round of proficiency testing will give veterinarians the assurance they need that the product is ready to be used in the field. The kit has been beta tested nationwide by XLVets.

“Our plan is to use the kit with veterinarians first and build credibility and trust within the industry,” Daniel Izquierdo told the Farming Independent.

“We are preparing to bring the product fully to market and it will be very competitively priced compared to traditional tests.”

The kit is manufactured entirely in Ireland by Micron Agritech in Dublin together with Gentian Services in Clare.

The Company has confirmed that the Micron Kit is suitable for use as part of the Targeted Advisory Service on Animal Health (TASAH) for farmers

delivered by trained veterinarians.
