Microsoft begins testing Minecraft ray tracing on Xbox

Microsoft has started testing ray tracing support for Minecraft on Xbox Series X/S consoles. A new Minecraft The preview build is available for Xbox Insiders and includes limited ray tracing support. The latest test build is also marked as optimized for Xbox Series X/S, suggesting a next-gen patch is coming soon.

I tested the latest Minecraft Preview and were able to successfully enable some ray tracing support. However, it is not a simple switch. MinecraftAdditional resource packs enable ray tracing, and there is currently no easy way to download and install these on the Xbox version of the game. However, there is a workaround. You can host one Minecraft Session on a Windows PC with packages enabled and an Xbox player can join this session and ray tracing will be enabled.

You can then toggle ray tracing support on or off in the settings menu. There is also a setting for upscaling support, but this currently seems to be limited to Nvidia’s DLSS on the PC side. Hopefully that extends to eventually AMD’s FSR 2.0 support on Xboxor other upscaling techniques.

Minecraft Gamers on Xbox have been waiting a long time to hear about ray tracing on Xbox Series X/S. Microsoft originally teased Minecraft Ray tracing on Xbox Series X two years ago, and the addition of support in the latest preview build suggests it could be on the way soon.

MinecraftThe blocky aesthetic of was originally upgraded as part of Ray tracing start for the Windows 10 version of the game in December 2020. The ray tracing is most noticeable in water reflections or shadows inside Minecraftor through the extra detail in texture packs. Microsoft begins testing Minecraft ray tracing on Xbox
