Hundreds of people risking their lives to cross the English Channel on the day a handful of migrants were prevented from being flown to Rwanda shows controversial deportations are not the solution.

Few would dispute that human trafficking gangs must be stopped and that Britain has the right to police its borders. But what have we become?

Dumping people 4,000 miles away is “immoral” (Church of England bishops), “appalling” (Prince Charles) and “ugly” (Tory MP and former Minister Jesse Norman) when legal avenues for refugees are largely closed.

Seven out of ten of those who reach our shores have a legitimate right to stay.

The flight from Boscombe Down Air Force Base in Wiltshire was an expensive political gesture.

Boris Johnson and Priti Patel were even forced to issue a rare ministerial directive after Mandarins warned there was no evidence to justify the spending, including a £120million down payment to Rwanda.

There is no easy answer, but what the government is doing to incite hatred is clearly wrong.

Survivors of the Grenfell inferno, loved ones and the west London community will join forces to decide on a memorial to the 72 people who lost their lives five years ago.

But what New York did after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the collapsed Twin Towers is a potential source of inspiration.

The cowardly Prime Minister knows that Lorraine always hits out at the powerful, not like him at the powerless.
