Mike Schank’s best cinematic best friend from American movies is dead

As I watched “American Movie” on DVD, I didn’t know what to do when Smith decided to include Schank’s home phone number. Over the years, I’ve talked to real people called Schank, and, in some cases, they’ve had good, substantive conversations with him. He is one of those people who is open to the world. He has no interest, and seems to be baked in “American Movie” most of the time, but too much mental activity is masked by those seemingly glazed eyes.

Schank took it all in, and it showed up in his music. He likes to read classical works. Is he a Hendrix level guitarist? No, but he was attuned to something unbelievable in the universe, and he brought it out every time he played an instrument that brought him joy. In doing so, he made others incredibly happy. He shared his happiness, and he mattered. Deep.

Schank represents the best of us. He lives by a decent rule. When Smith asked him in “American Movie” why he was after Borchardt, he said, “I feel like Mark is like my best friend because, uh, he is.” That answer just broke my heart. We are so lucky to have him.
