Mikel Arteta hails after Arsenal’s tactical ‘risks’ paid off in Wolves’ late win

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta made some bold tactical substitutions in the second half, helping turn the game around in a late win over Wolves in Thursday night’s Premier League game.

Arsenal scored an impressive last-minute goal won 2-1 against the top opponents Wolves at Emirates fell behind in the first half.

Hwang Hee-Chan’s 10th-minute strike gave Bruno Lage’s side a priceless lead against late goals from Nicolas Pepe and Alexandre Lacazette saved a day for Mikel Arteta’s men.

It was an evening to vindicate Arteta, the Gunners coach, whose second-half substitutes helped change the game and took three precious points.

Eddie Nketiah and Pepe – who replaced Cedric Soares and Gabriel Martinelli at the end of the game respectively – combined to score the equalizer, while the winner also went to Arsenal Right.

Late goals look to be crucial in Arsenal’s ambitions this season as they battle for a place in the top four of the Premier League. Premier League – now they only have one point left Manchester United with two games in hand.

Second-half substitute Arteta received praise from Belgian boss Roberto Martinez – formerly Swansea manager Wigan and Everton – after the game.

Martinez had plenty of praise for the Gunners manager when he brought in an additional striker and changed Arsenal’s shape, helping to overload the right flank – which ultimately yielded both goals.

Martinez explained on Amazon Prime after the game: “There are key times for a manager to give your players an advantage, and putting Pepe in that full-back role and risking trying to earn an extra body in the box paid off..

“Obviously with the second goal you could say the deflection helped it, but Arsenal got their luck because they built that momentum.”

Martinez’s colleague Lee Dixon, formerly of Arsenal, also praised Arteta for his decisions in the second half.

The former right-back added: “The substitution changed the game and that dynamic as well as getting Pepe on and a little more direct.

“I think they played the game to Wolf and possession put them under a bit of pressure and towards the end of the game it was unfortunate from Wolves’ point of view but Arsenal wouldn’t mind that. ”

“It was an important win for us,” Arteta said in a post-match interview. The way we win creates trust and solidarity as well as atmosphere and engagement with our fans and that is absolutely essential. This is a really young squad and we need that.

“After three defeats in the first three, we had to avoid relegation. That was the first goal. Then we took it one game at a time… you just have to be consistent with your vision and the way you prepare and believe the results will come.”

Arsenal have no Premier League matches this weekend with the next game being away Watford on March 6.
