Mikel Arteta wants to take Arsenal “to the next level” after agreeing a new long-term deal with the Gunners.
The Spaniard has managed the Emirates since replacing Unai Emery at the end of 2019. He won the FA Cup in his first season in charge before a difficult second season saw them miss Europe for the first quarter of a century.
However, after being backed by almost £150million in the summer transfer window, Arsenal have endured a vastly improved season and are now struggling to return to the Champions League for the first time since 2016/17. And ahead of the final four games of the Premier League season, Arteta has confirmed his commitment to the club, signing an extension that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2025.
“I’m excited, grateful and really, really happy today,” he said on the club’s official website. “When I spoke to Josh [Kroenke] he could see the bat in the same place and he wanted to take the bat the way I wanted. So everything he said and everything Stan said when I was with both of them, they always delivered.
“We want to take the club to the next level and really measure ourselves against the top teams. For that we have to play in the Champions League. We need to be able to develop the team, improve our players, improve all departments, connect even more with our fans, improve the atmosphere in the Emirates, be able to attract top talent and the best people to recruit for this club to drive this project to this level.”
Arteta’s previous contract expired at the end of next season but can now focus fully on the ambitious rebuild that has seen them relevant again at the top of the Premier League table. In a unique double signing, Arsenal Women head coach Jonas Eidvall has also signed a new deal, with the WSL title race going until last weekend.
Josh Kroenke added: “My dad and I are delighted to have renewed Mikel and Jonas’ contracts. It gives stability and clarity for the future and helps us all move forward effectively together. Mikel’s commitment and passion are visible to everyone. We’re confident that as we progress he’ll make us fight for the best trophies in the game again.
“We turn to Jonas: he has had a fantastic start to his career in England. He did a great job with the team and we were fighting for the title last weekend. We are confident that he will continue to advance us in the years to come.”
Technical director Edu, who has helped oversee the high turnover of players under Arteta’s oversight, believes the announcement is timely as Arsenal need only improve on Tottenham’s results to secure Champions League football.
“I think the timing is perfect,” he explained. I truly believe that the message will be a great encouragement to everyone. For the fans, for the club, for the players, for Mikel. It’s important to show everyone where we want to go as a club. We have another big summer ahead of us and it’s important to have our coach here.”
