Millions banned forever from iconic iPhone app after 10 years of wholesale shutdown

APPLE has finally shut down one of the iPhone’s most popular apps.
Despite being widely regarded as the best weather app in the world, it is no longer available.
Yes, the iPhone maker has scrapped Dark Sky, which launched on iOS back in April 2012.
Apple bought Dark Sky in 2020 and closed the Android version of the app that same year.
And now Apple has also discontinued the app on the iPhone as of December 31, 2022.
But it’s not all bad news.
Apple actually borrowed many of Dark Sky’s features and embedded them into the stock iPhone weather app.
It started with more maps and detailed information in iOS 15.
Even more was added with iOS 16 earlier this year.
This includes useful things like real-time notifications.
It’s a feature that’s particularly useful for alerting you to important weather changes, such as e.g. B. snowfall to warn.
It was always the plan to discontinue Dark Sky as a standalone app and put all its power into the Apple Weather app.
The app was pulled from the App Store back in September.
But now the service has stopped working for everyone who still has it installed on their iPhone.
“As previously announced, the Dark Sky iOS app will no longer be available as of December 31, 2022, and as of that date, previously purchased versions of the app will no longer provide weather data,” Dark Sky’s website reads.
“The Dark Sky API and website will continue to function until March 31, 2023.”
Dark Sky claimed to offer the “most accurate source of hyperlocal weather information”.
The app wasn’t free: you had to pay $3.99 to use it.
In contrast, Apple’s own weather app is completely free and comes pre-installed on every iPhone.
