PARENTS have the ability to set “digital ground rules” thanks to a number of handy tools from Google.
In a digital age full of gadgets, it can be difficult to keep kids in check all the time.
Then there’s Family Link, a free service that lets you manage kids’ accounts and devices.
It was first introduced in 2017, but Google keeps adding new little things to improve the function.
With tablets and other devices likely to be under the tree this Christmas, there’s no better time to get acquainted with what’s on offer.
First, you need to get your hands on your kid’s devices to be able to control them.
Open settingsthen go to Googlefollowed by child lock.
Follow the setup steps.
Then you can install the Family Link app on your own device.
Limit screen time
You can decide how long the kids’ Android devices are active so they don’t use them secretly after bedtime.

There is also a way to set a limit on how long they spend on it on any given day.
So you may only be allowed to work a maximum of two hours during the week, but allow a little more at the weekend.
Downloads and Purchases
Parents can control which apps the kids can and can’t have.
There is a feature to approve or deny attempted app downloads from the Google Play Store.
The same also applies to in-app purchases.
App Activity Reports
Each app has a different purpose, of course, so you’ll probably enjoy three hours of reading more than three hours of gaming.
You can get app activity reports to see exactly how much time your kid is spending on it.
From there, you can decide what they have access to.
As a parent, you also receive a number of additional protections.
For example, you can change your son or daughter’s password or reset it in case they forget it.
They have the authority to edit the personal information in their account – and even delete the account altogether if necessary.
Family Link also allows you to see the location of their Android devices.
Of course, it needs to be connected to the internet and recently active to work.
But it could be a useful feature when they’re on the go.
Although Family Link is designed for Android devices, you can download the app to run these controls on iOS.
So if you own an iPhone, you can still set the rules on your Android kit.
