A POPULAR app downloaded more than five million times could be leaking human data, experts have warned.
Web Explorer – Fast Internet is an alternative to Google Chrome that is rated pretty highly on Android.
It claims to be much faster than big-name rivals, speeding up browsing by 30 percent.
However, the app is claimed to have bugs that allow it to leak sensitive things like browsing history.
And all because the developers left open a crucial behind-the-scenes part of the app cyber news.
The massive oversight apparently jeopardizes days of redirect data, including country, all presented by user ID.
Luckily, the data is anonymized, so hackers would have to do a little more work to get any meaningful use out of it.
However, if they cross-check the information with other details, it could pose a risk.
“If threat actors could de-anonymize the app’s users, they could examine a set of browsing history information for a specific user and use it for extortion purposes,” Cybernews experts said.
Researchers say the open issue is now closed and no longer accessible.
Any hacker could have gotten away with the treasure trove of data before the warning was publicly issued.
Luckily, any bad actors hoping to jump on it now are too late.
What the developers of Web Explorer – Fast Internet make of it is unclear.
Cybernews contacted the company and got nothing in return.
The Sun has also reached out to the developers since the results went live, unsuccessfully.
The app itself was last updated in October 2020.
According to experts, this means that “hard-coded secrets are still there”.
“As the issue is now only partially resolved and we have had no response from the app developers, we can only guess what other information might be leaking through the application’s secrets,” Cybernews said.
Despite millions of downloads, Web Explorer – Fast Internet numbers are nothing compared to Google Chrome.
Google Play Store data shows Chrome has been downloaded more than 10 billion times.
