Nearly two million people skip meals after a spike in food prices, an exclusive Daily Mirror poll has found.

It was also found that one in four responded to higher prices by eating food past its sell-by date.

The poll comes as a charity said it had heard from some people who now considered a jacket potato a luxury because the oven was on for so long to make it.

Along with energy, a major factor in the rising bills of millions of families has been a sharp rise in food costs.

Food and beverage price inflation hit a near-decade high at 5.9% in March.

However, experts warn that it is likely to top 7% in the coming months due to a range of factors, from labor shortages to the war in Ukraine.

One analyst told the Mirror he believes food inflation could rise to between 8% and 12% by the summer.

That would add around £400 to the average family’s annual grocery bill.

A poll for Deltapoll’s Daily Mirror of 1,610 adults online between April 21 and 23 found that a staggering 81% had noticed their grocery bills had increased in the past three months.

As a result, six out of ten consumers have made changes, such as E.g. giving up luxury goods, buying less groceries and switching to supermarket own brands.

Just under three in 10 people who made changes said they were now using outdated foods.

And 13% said they now go without meals – that’s the equivalent of 1.8 million people.

The survey also asked which devices in the household are used less in order to save money. After heating (57%), about a third said they ran the washer and dryer less or not at all.

Adam Scorer, chief executive of charity National Energy Action, said: “This cost of living crisis is affecting everyone, but it is already ruining the lives of those on the lowest incomes.”
