Just last week, Apple urged all users to install a new iOS update.

This added new protections against a hack attack that allowed crooks to take control of your iPhone.

But several iPhone models will be cut off from iOS updates later this year with the arrival of iOS 16.

So if you are using a very old iPhone, you should strongly consider upgrading.

Apple regularly releases iOS updates to fix security vulnerabilities.

Hackers can exploit these bugs to take control of parts (or even all) of your handset.

If you don’t regularly install iOS updates on your iPhone, the loopholes exploited by hackers remain open.

Some very old iPhone models no longer receive iOS updates.

This poses a significant risk of hacking, so it’s worth considering an upgrade as soon as possible.

For example, when the iOS 16 update lands in September, Apple’s 1st generation iPhone 6S, iPhone 7 and iPhone SE will be cut off.

These phones were compatible with the latest iOS 15.6.1 but will not get iOS 16.

If you’re using older iPhones, you’re already cut off, so consider upgrading to a newer model right away.

Here is the full list of devices supported by iOS 16:

  • iPhone 13
  • iPhone 13 mini
  • iPhone 13 pro
  • iPhone 13 Pro max
  • iphone 12
  • iPhone 12 mini
  • iPhone 12 pro
  • iPhone 12 pro max
  • iphone 11
  • iPhone 11 pro
  • iPhone 11 Pro max
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone X
  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 8plus
  • iPhone SE (2nd generation or newer)

Any iPhones not on this list will not get iOS 16.

If you’re using an older iPhone, you simply need to upgrade your handset to a newer device to access iOS 16.

If you haven’t updated your iPhone recently, you should do so as soon as possible.

According to Apple, the latest iOS 15.6.1 update fixes a number of security vulnerabilities that are “actively exploited”.
