It’s Jingle Bells season, so warm up your singing voice and get ready for some iPhone karaoke.
Apple recently introduced a brand new feature that lets you turn your iPhone, iPad or Apple TV into a real karaoke machine.
It works with Apple Music, Spotify’s rival on iOS.
The new feature is called Apple Music Sing and is available now.
Easily update your device to the latest software by going to Settings > General > Software update.
Longtime Apple Music users will know that the service already offers a scrolling lyrics view for songs so you can sing along — but now it’s even better.
Apple Music Sing massively improves on this feature to let you sing along properly.
The app feature consists of two main parts: adjustable vocals and real-time lyrics.
Songs now have a Sing slider that allows you to turn down or even almost mute the vocals in a song.
It uses powerful on-device processing to analyze the song waveform and isolate the vocals.
You can control this simply by tapping the mic on a Sing-approved song.
The other element of the feature is real-time texts.
Instead of displaying lyrics line by line, Sing Tracks highlights lyrics by syllable.
This should help you sing along even if you are unfamiliar with the song.
If a song has backing vocals, they are shown in a smaller font between the main lines.
And on a duet track, the song splits the lyrics on the left and right sides of the screen depending on who’s singing.
Apple says the new feature will be available later this month.
“The Apple Music lyrics experience is consistently one of the most popular features of our service,” said Oliver Schusser, Apple’s vice president of Apple Music and Beats.
“We already know that our users around the world love to follow their favorite songs, so we wanted to take this offering even further to enable even more engagement with music through singing.
“It’s really a lot of fun, our customers will love it.”
Apple Music editors will be curating dozens of song playlists by theme, decade and genre.
And you can also search sing songs directly. Just look for the microphone icon.
It’s only available to Apple Music subscribers (£10.99 / $10.99), so you’ll need a membership to enjoy it.
Apple Music Sing will work on compatible iPhone and iPad models (with an A13 chip or higher – so at least an iPhone 11) as well as the new Apple TV 4K.
It won’t work if you only pay for the cheaper Apple Music Voice plan.
