It looks like Netflix is planning to remove a popular feature for those who subscribe to the site’s new cheaper ad-supported subscription.
Hitmaker Stranger Things will soon launch a new option with ads at a discounted price to win back throngs of users who have quit.
But ads might not be the only big difference you’ll notice.
According to a developer, you may be blocked from downloading shows and movies offline.
The ability to watch shows offline is a huge perk, allowing people to save some of their favorites straight to mobile devices so they can watch when there’s no network connection.
Expert Steve Moser dug behind Netflix’s iPhone app and discovered that the feature is disabled for those on the new tier. Bloomberg reports.
Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos previously hinted that some privileges for the ad-supported plan would need to be cut.
Thankfully, there’s no indication that those with the three existing paid subscription types will lose the offline option.
The desperate move comes amid an exodus of nearly a million subscribers.
Netflix also recently lost its crown as the most popular streaming platform to Disney+.
Another measure the bosses are working on is a massive crackdown on password sharing.
Users are banned from sharing their account with anyone outside of their household, but Netflix has long turned a blind eye.
Now the site is asking subscribers to incur additional expenses to add members who don’t live with them.
It is currently being tested in a handful of countries.
Netflix is expected to launch the ad-supported tier early next year.
There’s no word yet on how much it will cost, although insiders have told The Sun that it could cost as little as £5.49/$7.99 in the UK and US.
