Millions of PlayStation owners could be owed “up to £560 each” as Sony is accused of overcharging gamers – it has been claimed

PLAYSTATION gamers could be owed hundreds in compensation as Sony faces court cases for allegedly “ripping people off” by overpriced games.

The gaming giant is being sued for £5bn on behalf of nearly nine million players.

If successful, each person could receive up to £562, with no interest.

The legal claim centers on a 30 percent commission that the Japanese company receives for every digital game and in-game purchase made through its PlayStation Store.

“The game is hot for Sony PlayStation,” said consumer rights advocate Alex Neill, who is leading the claim.

“With this lawsuit, I am standing up for the millions of people in the UK who have been unknowingly overcharged.

“We believe that Sony abused its position and ripped off its customers.”

The class action lawsuit was filed with the Competition Appeal Tribunal on Friday.

It argues that Sony is violating competition law by abusing its market power to impose unfair terms and conditions on game developers and publishers and to increase prices for players.

They believe UK consumers have been overcharged by up to £5billion on digital game purchases over the past six years.

The entitlement applies to anyone in the UK who has purchased digital games or add-on in-game content on their console or via PlayStation Store since August 19, 2016.

It is estimated that each person could receive between £67 and £562 (excluding interest) depending on how many games they bought.

“Gaming is now the largest entertainment industry in the UK, ahead of television, video and music, and many vulnerable people rely on gaming for community and connection,” Mr Neill continued.

“Sony’s actions are costing millions of people who cannot afford it, especially when we are in the midst of a cost of living crisis and consumer wallets are being squeezed like never before.”
