A “HIGH Severity” app bug compromised the Ring Doorbell’s video recordings, it turns out.
Tech giant Amazon quietly updated the Ring app for Android in May to fix the security bug.
Experts sounded the alarm after finding a flaw that hackers could have used to install shady things on a user’s phone.
This would have given cyber crooks an opportunity to steal personal details, geolocation and camera recordings.
Ring is the world’s largest video doorbell product.
Its Android app has been downloaded over 10 million times.
Luckily, the company quickly rolled out an update that fixes the problem.
security researcher Checkmarx alerted Amazon on May 1st and a fixed app was released by May 27th.
According to Amazon, no customer data was disclosed.
They believe it would have been “difficult” for anyone to actually get through.
If someone managed to exploit it, victims would first have to be tricked into installing a malicious app.
Only then would a hacker be able to obtain tiny files called authentication cookies, which keep you logged in instead of having to re-enter passwords every time.
Once a cyber spy obtains these, they can rummage around a person’s account without the password and take away all the personal information stored on it, including video recordings.
“We released a fix for supported Android customers on May 27, 2022, shortly after the researchers’ submission was processed,” Amazon said.
“Based on our review, no customer information was disclosed.
“This problem would be extremely difficult for anyone to exploit, as it requires an unlikely and complex set of circumstances to execute.”
The Ring app should have been automatically updated on Android devices once version 3.51.0 became available on May 27th.
If you have automatic updates turned off, you should go to the Google Play Store and install the latest version immediately.
