Millions of WhatsApp users must watch out for “new texts” with a very big tick

WHATSAPP users may soon see a brand new type of text in the app.

Meta’s own chat app develops a message that you are only allowed to read once.

These so-called View Once texts are intended to strengthen your privacy.

It means you can share something sensitive – like a WiFi password – a little more securely.

The feature is not live yet, but is currently being developed at WhatsApp.

WhatsApp usually tests new features in the beta version of the app.

This means we often hear about changes to the Meta custom app before they go live globally.

Just a few days ago, WhatsApp detectives at WABetaInfo revealed that WhatsApp is developing “View Once” text messages.

This is an upgrade of the existing View Once feature, which currently only works for images and videos.

The idea is that the feature for texts will work the same way.

They send a text that can only be seen once before it disappears.

It’s possible that WhatsApp also prevents you from taking screenshots of View Once texts, as it already does with images and videos.

“As with once-viewable images and videos, it is not possible to forward and copy once-viewable text messages,” explained WABetaInfo.

“About screenshots, they should be blocked as well, but we’ll give you confirmation when a future update comes out.”

The feature is currently in development, which means it’s not yet available for testing — even for beta users.

But it will eventually enter a testing phase and then move on to the general version of WhatsApp.

Unfortunately, there’s no way of knowing how long that will take – it could be weeks or even months.

If you want the best chance of trying out new features first, consider joining the WhatsApp beta.
