ZOOM users have been warned to update their app after a dangerous vulnerability was revealed.

Experts have found a bug that could allow hackers to take control of your computer.

The problem was limited to Mac only.

security researcher Patrick Wardel sounded the alarm at a conference in Las Vegas last week.

The problem appears to be with the Zoom installer, which requires special permission from the computer’s owner to run.

With control over this tool, hackers could basically “trick” Zoom into installing anything they like.

I saw my partner on Zoom have a stroke - I couldn't even call 999 when he collapsed
I married a lover on Zoom without even meeting him - 3 months later my world imploded

This would then allow cyber criminals to rummage around your computer and change anything they want.

Worryingly, they might even modify, delete or add files.

Within days, Zoom rolled out a patch for the issue — officially known as CVE-2022-28756.

The fix is included in version 5.11.5 of the app.

How to update Zoom

To download the update, Mac users should open Zoom and select in the top left.

Version 5.11.5 should appear for download.

What is Zoom?

  • Popular chat app zoom is best known for offering video calls — including calls with large numbers of people
  • There is a free tier with unlimited meetings, but these group chats are limited to 40 minutes
  • The most expensive tier gives you meetings for up to 1,000 participants, but there are cheaper options
  • Perhaps the only downside is that Zoom has had privacy issues in the past, which may put some businesses off
  • Signing up for Zoom is free and easy
  • All you need is a valid email address and a willingness to accept Zoom’s privacy policy and terms – which are pretty standard
  • Anyone can sign up for Zoom by downloading the app or going to the official website
