ATTENTION gamers and their loved ones: Don’t let one simple mistake spoil your Christmas.

If you’re buying a new console for December 25th, you have to do something first.

There’s nothing worse than opening up a new console on Christmas Day and realizing that you probably won’t be playing games for a while.

That’s because consoles usually take a long time to get set up properly.

First off, your PS5 or Xbox will almost certainly need some very major software updates right out of the box.

And if you have a PS5, you’ll likely need to upgrade your DualSense controller as well.

Once this is done, you need to get yourself some games.

It can take hours to download just a single game – and then even more time to install it.

All of this can really suck the fun out of a Christmas morning.

So if you’re buying someone (or giving yourself one) a Sony or Microsoft console for Christmas, make sure you set it up ahead of time.

“During the excitement, it’s easy to forget to prepare everything before wrapping the big gift,” explains a Sony blog post.

“I remember when my kids were younger and I had to assemble a bike for my daughter’s Christmas gifts.

“I’d been procrastinating for days, but actually booking a night out was a lot easier than I imagined.

“The thought of setting up your gaming console can be similar but is just as important so your child can hop on it and safely have fun once it’s unpacked.”

How to set up a console as a gift

Setting up a console as a gift is actually very simple.

That’s because it will walk you through most of the process as soon as you plug in the console and turn it on.

Remember: if you want to set it up fully, you’ll need the login credentials of the player you’re buying it for. They might not want to share that.

It’s a bit easier if it’s someone’s first console – which might be the case if you’re buying it for a child – since you can create an account for them.

But ultimately, you could just create a temporary account for yourself to do the software updates, and then log out once the lucky recipient opens the gift.

Remember that if you install digital games on your own account, you will not be able to play them on your account.

So if you’re buying a game digitally, make sure you’re only doing so on the recipient’s account.

Even if you install a game from a disc, it will only be installed on your account.

When you’re done installing the software updates, put the console back in its box and have it packed up for Christmas morning.
