In fact, it turns out there are only five and it’s all due to an optical illusion.

Even more shocking is that each eye pillar is the same color.

The illusion is a well-known eye trick called the Munker-White illusion.

The effect occurs because of the densely colored lines across it, which deceive what you see.

As you zoom in on the image, the illusion fades slightly and you should be able to see the true color better.

Corresponding lensewhich produced the clever image, psychologist Michael White developed the concept in the 1960s.

It refers to the perceived lightness of a form.

For example, the same two gray rectangles appear to be lighter or darker shades of gray when placed next to white or black objects.

In the 1970s, Hans Munker, another psychologist, noticed that the same effect applies to colored objects.

“Munker-White’s illusion works by placing a monochromatic object behind differently colored bars, which affects the way we see it,” explains Lenstore’s Sujata Paul.

“It relies on changing the stripes in the foreground and still works when the color of the background is changed.

“This distorted color perception is caused by a phenomenon based on the Bezold effect, named after Professor Wilhelm von Bezold, who discovered that a color can appear differently depending on its relationship to neighboring colors.

“While some scientists believe the illusion kicks in in the early stages of visual processing when light first hits the retina, others believe the effects take place later in the brain as it processes the data.”
