MINISTERS have agreed to set up a new Cabinet Subcommittee on Ukraine to oversee the state’s response to the crisis caused by the Russian invasion.
abinet on Tuesday approved the establishment of the new committee that will be responsible for overseeing the government’s response to the crisis in Ukraine, which will primarily focus on housing the thousands of refugees displaced from the war in recent weeks afflicted country have come to Ireland.
However, the Committee will also be the key advisory and decision-making body for the economic response to the crisis, which has skyrocketed global energy prices and had a major impact on key commodities.
The proposal agreed by ministers to set up the new dedicated sub-committee sees the committee composed of the three leaders of the coalition party – Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar and Environment and Transport Minister Eamon Ryan.
Foreign Secretary Simon Coveney, who has overseen Ireland’s diplomatic response to the crisis at EU and UN Security Council levels, among others, will also be a member of the subcommittee.
Its members also include Treasury Secretary Paschal Donohoe, Government Spending Michael McGrath, Children and Equality Secretary Roderic O’Gorman, Social Protection Secretary Heather Humphreys, Justice Secretary Helen McEntee and Housing Secretary Darragh O’Brien.
The committee will also include key officials from government departments and some political advisers to leaders and ministers. The committee was set up in addition to a high-level group of department secretaries-general, which has been meeting weekly since the crisis began. It is chaired by Martin Fraser, the outgoing general secretary of the Department of the Taoiseach, who will soon be replaced by his deputy, John Callinan.
Government sources said other ministers may also be brought to meetings of the new subcommittee on issues emerging in the coming weeks, including Health Secretary Stephen Donnelly and Education Secretary Norma Foley.
