Mixing foods like grapes and onions can be good for your health by lowering your blood pressure, nutrition experts say.

Rob Hobson, a registered nutritionist with a special interest in food science, has uncovered this food combinations this can increase your health greatly and also be healthy on its own.

A fish curry that combines both turmeric and oily fish can be a powerful anti-inflammatory, while eating a banana along with yogurt can improve your bone health and help with gut bacteria.

Meanwhile, olive oil helps the human body absorb the vitamin A found in tomatoes and peppers, which is necessary for healthy skin and eyes.

While black grapes, rich in the polyphenol antioxidant catechin, help curb cardiovascular disease, cancer, and neurological disorders, and along with onions, may prevent blood clots and promote cardiovascular health.

Other health-promoting food combinations include garlic and honey, which can help with upper respiratory infections, and almonds and berries, which can help prevent heart disease.

But a study of 2,000 adults found that 21 percent have little or no understanding of vitamins and minerals and their role in their bodies.

Rob Hobson, speaking on behalf of the dietary supplement brand Healthspan, which commissioned the study, said: “We thrive on synergy and many of us create it in our lives without even knowing we are doing it.

“From a biological perspective, the body needs synergy to function properly.

“Food synergy is defined by the way in which certain foods and the nutrients they contain work together to provide health benefits that are more potent than the individual foods alone.”

He said that simply combining two items can magnify the effects on your health.

“While the foods can have their own individual health benefits, these can be even greater when mixed together as they can help the other do their jobs better,” he added.

“Our diet is hugely important to our health, and there can be real benefits in being more mindful of what we eat and how we combine foods, and these can then be used to target certain conditions like reducing inflammation, treating… Diabetes and heart disease or how to combat symptoms of menopause.”

The study also found that 54 percent of adults are unaware that combining different foods can benefit their health, and 31 percent never consider mixing foods to get more out of them.

Still, 54 percent believe their diets are missing important vitamins or nutrients, with 39 percent blaming it on not knowing what vitamins and minerals are in different foods.

Another 36 percent attribute this to not knowing what nutrients they need.

Vitamin D (38 percent), iron (33 percent), and vitamin C (31 percent) are among the nutrients people are most likely to think they are lacking.

As a result, 56 percent of adults currently take a dietary supplement, with 46 percent of those taking vitamin D and 35 percent consuming a general multivitamin.

But 44 percent make no effort to ensure they’re getting the right amount of vitamins each day, even though 80 percent believe a person’s health can be controlled by what they eat.

It also found that people believed vitamin and mineral deficiencies led to 46 percent of health problems.

Although only 32 percent of those surveyed via OnePoll are confident they would know the signs of a deficiency in certain vitamins and minerals.

dr Sarah Brewer, medical director at Healthspan, said: “Food should always come first, but a clever combination of vitamins and minerals in supplements can also play a role in supporting our health.”
