Modern love essay competition: What is love like for you?

The last time we held a college essay contest, in 2019, the world is a very different place. Three years ago, college students still hadn’t experienced a pandemic, a global movement for racial and social justice, a growing number of climate disasters, or riots on the U.S. Capitol. .

How is love for you during these special times? Have you experienced surprising opportunities, unexpected challenges, new ways to connect or take advantage of difficult circumstances? We are looking for stories that are trendy or timeless, influenced by world events or not.

Tell us your story in a personal essay of 1,500 to 1,700 words and submit it no later than March 27 at 11:59 p.m. ET. We will announce one winner and four finalists in early May. The winner will receive a $1,000 prize and all five essays can be posted on Modern Love.

As with all Modern Love essays, we’re looking for authentic, well-told stories in which both the author and the reader realize something they didn’t before. To understand what we’re looking for, read on past college competition winners and finalists. As you will see, the themes are different from How technology is changing the way we connect arrive oppressive masculine rules of behavior.

The contest is open to legal residents of the United States 18 years of age or older and students currently attending college at a U.S. college or university (including those expected to graduate in first six months of 2022 and those who are on leave are absent from their university studies). How do I submit?

  • Submit your 1500-1700 word entry to Please put the subject of your essay or a possible title in the email subject line.

  • Include your full, legal name and the name of the college or university you’re currently attending, even if you’re currently on leave.

  • Attach your essay as a Microsoft Word compatible document and paste the text into the body of the email. If your first submission was incomplete, please resubmit a complete item; don’t just send the missing pieces in additional emails.

  • The essay must be completely true. Do not use pseudonyms (including your own), compound characters, or contrived situations or scenes. There is no exception to this rule.

  • Essays must have not been previously published. Work that has appeared online – on another news website, personal blog, Media, or elsewhere – is considered previously published.

  • Essays will be edited in consultation with the writers, and writers will be compensated for published work.
