Senegal overcome Egypt on penalties for the second time in two months to secure a place at the 2022 World Cup sadio mane piled up more heartbreak Liverpool teammate Mohammed Salah.
In a thrilling repeat of the Africa Cup of Nations final in February, it took a penalty shoot-out to separate the two sides after a reluctant second leg in Diamniadio. Remarkably, each of the first four penalties was missed, with Senegalese captain Kalidou Koulibaly hitting the bar and Salah firing over the goal. However, Mane made no mistake from 12 yards to ensure his country will be represented in Qatar after also scoring the crucial penalty in the AFCON Finals.
The Pharaohs watched their 1-0 aggregate lead from Friday’s first leg in Cairo end just four minutes into the game when Boulaye Dia’s shot was deflected off Hamdi Fathi and trickled over the line from a set piece. Egypt had to force two substitutions in the first half of the ill-tempered affair, with Rami Rabia and Omar Gaber both sidelined. Senegal were far more dangerous side throughout the clash and Mane got past the visitors’ defense only to be penalized for a hand ball.

Salah, meanwhile, was largely kept quiet but produced a great momentum in the second half that substitute Zizo missed. At the other end, Idrissa Gana Gueye shot just wide with a free kick and shot down Watford Striker Ismaila Sarr was particularly dangerous. Senegal maintained their dominance in overtime but none of the 25 shots they scored during the game could break Mohammed El Shenawy’s stubborn resistance.
The Pharaohs goalkeeper saved Saliou Ciss – who scored Senegal’s second penalty in the shootout – with a fine save, but his efforts were in vain as Ahmed Sayed and Mostafa Mohamed missed for the visitors.
