A mother has described how she was close to death after developing a case of chills, which turned out to be life-threatening sepsis, while out for a walk.

Edinburgh’s Kimberley Bradley was left in a wheelchair after life-threatening septicemia in 2019, which saw her rushed to hospital.

The 42-year-old had been out for a walk over Easter weekend when she started feeling “cold and shaky” but initially dismissed the symptoms. daily record reported.

However, when the mother of one child returned home, her condition deteriorated rapidly and only a few hours later she was unable to speak as her condition took a significant hit.

Desperate, her husband called an ambulance and Kimberley was taken to hospital, where she underwent emergency treatment at the Royal Infirmary.

She said: “We had enjoyed a lovely walk on the beach and over the Easter weekend the weather was really lovely.

“We got home early in the evening and started making the tea.

“I was very cold and shivering and thought I might have gotten too much sun.

“About an hour later I started throwing up. I decided to go to bed and see how I felt in the morning. Nathan came in to check on me a little while later and I felt worse.

“He asked me questions and I couldn’t speak. I was scared and thought I was having a stroke.”

The mother added that she vaguely remembered being taken to an ambulance until she awoke from an induced coma eight days later.

She said: “I had contracted meningococcal sepsis, which had progressed to sepsis where all my organs stopped working.”

“I was shocked at how quickly things happened and to hear how close I was to death.”

She had been at a new job for three weeks when she fell ill and as she did not return within a month her contract was cancelled. Kimberley’s employer said she could reapply once she’s well.

Kimberley is still undergoing various treatments, including kidney dialysis at the hospital, three years after she was first diagnosed with sepsis.

■ Sepsis affects 250,000 people in the UK, killing 44,000 a year. That’s more than colon, breast and prostate cancer and traffic accidents combined.

■ Sepsis is the body’s often fatal response to infection.

■ At first it may look like the flu or a chest infection, but it can quickly become serious.

■ Get urgent medical help if you develop any of the following symptoms…

– are lethargic or difficult to wake up

– feeling unusually cold

– the skin looks mottled, bluish or pale

– breathe very quickly

– have a rash that doesn’t fade when you press on it

– have seizures or convulsions

She suffered from necrotic tissue on her hands, feet and nose, had seen her toes amputated and may need further amputations in the future, including her feet.

She said: “I feel like sometimes it will never end, but hopefully further surgeries will resolve the issue.”

Kimberley was unaware of sepsis prior to her diagnosis and encourages others to let someone know if they are unwell.

She added: “Trust your own instincts and if you’re feeling sick let someone know.

“If my husband hadn’t checked on me all night, I wouldn’t have survived the morning.”
