Navigating the world of dating can be difficult, especially when it’s not always clear what a person’s intentions are when you first meet them.

And one mum on Mumsnet has found that meeting new people online can be particularly risky, as some people use dating apps to lie about their own relationship status and find someone to cheat on their partner with – rather than around find a meaningful connection.

The mum explained she was on a first date with a man she met on Bumble and thought things were going well until he showed her something on his phone.

The screen he showed her showed a list of some of his contacts, including her own, but there was one glaring flaw among them – it was stored under a male name rather than her actual nickname.

In her postShe wrote: “So on Friday night I had a first date with a guy from Bumble. Everything was going well until the end of the date when he showed me something on the messaging app we chatted with after the match.

“He saved my name as ‘Charles’ and not ‘Charlotte.’

“I said, ‘Why did you save my name like that?’ He said it was just a typo, I had a weird gut feeling, but he immediately changed my name to the real name.

“He has asked to meet up again this week – we’ve had some light texting back and forth but I can’t shake the feeling he’s lying and saved me as a guy’s name to cover up he’s already in a relationship is and monkey branching into the next or cheating (neither great).

“Am I unreasonable to just cancel the next date because of this? Or could it really be innocent?”

Commenters on the Mumsnet post were divided because while some said the contact error was a clear sign that she should run for the mountains, others said they wouldn’t cut it off entirely if they “really like” it, but she did would be more careful around him.

One person said: “There is no such thing as an innocent explanation. Not one. He already has a woman in his life and he hides you. That is the only explanation.”

While another added: “Whatever the reason he did it, it’s weird. He wrote it that way for a reason. Trust your gut feeling.”

But someone else disagreed, saying: “You’re not unreasonable to be careful, but it could be true that it was an autocorrect that he just never changed.” If I really liked him, I wouldn’t stop watching him just for that, but I would definitely have my eyes open.”

“Such a simple solution. He’s hiding you for some reason,” wrote a fourth.
