A mother-of-two has told how her sons suffered “absolute agony” from sunburn despite buying factor 50 cream while on holiday.

Carlien Pretorius, from Rogerstone in Newport, was spending hours in Gran Canaria with her boys Joshua, 11, and Luke, 9, last week when she noticed they were both starting to burn.

Despite applying SPF (sun protection factor) 50 and wearing t-shirts, Carlien said Joshua’s burns had gotten so bad that she decided to take photos and post them on social media, she reported Wales Online.

She blames the local “Parafarmacia,” a shop that sells hygiene products and non-prescription drugs, for the cream, which she claims failed to do its job.

After the burns got so bad, she said she took her sons to the same shop where they gave her an ointment to apply to the skin, which cost a total of €110.

“That made it a lot worse, which then led to us going to the public doctor’s office where they gave us wonderful free advice,” she said.

The image shared by Carlien below shows Joshua’s skin nearly a week after the initial burn.

“When the skin is wet, you can see how thin it is and how far it has to go before it’s fully healed,” she explains.

“The boys burned just being in the pool even though they were wearing full 50+ sunscreen and t-shirts. The sunscreen I bought was from the pharmacy. Really shocking. I think there must be something wrong with it, maybe it’s out of date, or it might be the wrong sunscreen for its age.

“Both were in a lot of pain and I had to give them regular Calpol which luckily I had brought from the UK. Joshua in particular was in absolute agony.

“I was really worried, I secretly cried with worry while they slept. I’m still worried it will leave permanent scars.”

Carlien said she blames the shop that sold her sunscreen on the island for global warming, which she believes made the island “a lot hotter than it was eight years ago when we got here,” and herself for ” not being able to protect my children from this terrible thing that is happening to them”.

“I am very grateful to the public doctors for the free consultation through our EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) cards,” she said. “We will always remember this vacation disaster and probably be remembered by the possible scars for the rest of our lives.”

After spending much of her holiday flipping through Spanish TV channels in her hotel room, Carlien said she felt she had to offer advice to others planning to go abroad to a hot climate.

She added: “It was really disastrous because we had to spend five or six days of our two-week annual holiday in a hot apartment with nothing to do. We couldn’t go swimming or go out because I urgently needed to protect her from the sun.

“My advice would be; Take your sunscreen from the UK, take Calpol for the kids and any other medication from the UK, stay out of the sun between 12pm and 4pm, take your EHIC cards with you if you go to the Travel abroad and check all advice – even the fine print on products – abroad.”
