A mother-of-four has said she “won’t survive another winter” after living in a damp and flooded apartment for five years.

Joanna Vienesta, 44, has to walk through her flooded apartment in rubber boots after regular leaks in pipes in her four-bedroom property.

The mother, from Ongar, Essex, said her eight-year-old daughter, who she lives with, cut her chin in an unusual accident when she slipped on surface water.

She claims the flat left her with health problems and has called on Epping Forest District Council, which manages the property, to fix her horror flat.

As well as slipping, Joanna ‘broke four ribs’ falling over surface water due to leaking pipes in her bathroom – and claims the mold in her home causes her to regularly lose her voice.

Her 8-year-old daughter has suffered from the damp conditions and has missed school because she is uncomfortable at home.

The mother claims her daughter is too embarrassed to invite friends over because of the condition of the property.

Joanna told The Sun: “This is the hell we live with every day, I can’t go on. It’s so humiliating for a human being.

“All I want is a suitable house. I just want a nice home for my little one.”

Joanna told how the problems began shortly after the family moved – when three of the children had left – when her daughter’s electric heater leaked so badly that the ceiling of her bedroom collapsed.

The Moreton Road flat has also resulted in mold growing on her kitchen cupboards as the leaking pipes have caused her drawers to fall apart.

Her bathroom is leaking and water has come out of the toilet, which has raised the floor – meaning she can now place her toilet anywhere in the house.

The 44-year-old said she spends most of her time “emptying buckets of water seven to eight times a day” while placing them under the flooded pipes to try to stem the outflow.

The mum pays £530 a month for her flat and cares for her ailing mum and father who live nearby but admits their life is a “living hell” as the council says the damage caused by the floods did not fix problems.

The council promised work on their property would be completed in January but has not started yet – as the council now wants the mother and daughter to move into a hostel due to the lack of available homes.

However, Joanna has claimed that the council won’t let her two dogs and cat because they would have to be handed over or euthanized in order to move out of the damp apartment.

She admitted that although the house is “hell”, moving to a hostel would be like “prison”.

Cllr Holly Whitbread, Housing and Community Portfolio Owner, said: “Epping Forest District Council is committed to maintaining quality homes.

“Our top priority is to support our tenants and create thriving communities where people want to live.

“Although we cannot comment on the specifics of this case, after numerous attempts to contact Ms. Vienesta, our teams are working intensively with her and her family to resolve her housing concerns.

“This includes offering temporary accommodation during the work.

“We will continue to work hard to support the family to reach a solution.”
