A man dressed as an old woman smeared cakes over the Mona Lisa in protest of the planet.

The visitor to the Louvre in Paris tried to smash the glass protecting the world’s most famous painting before smearing cream on its surface in an alleged climate-related publicity stunt.

He then jumped out of the wheelchair he was sitting in before attacking the glass.

“The man tried to break the glass protecting the painting and – when it didn’t break – smeared a cake on the surface,” a source said.

“He did no harm after jumping out of his wheelchair. It was pretty clear he was a man pretending to be an old woman.”

A video showed a Louvre employee cleaning the glass after the painting attack.

The poster continued, “(He) then smears cake on the glass and throws roses everywhere before being attacked by security guards.”

Social media reactions to the incident described it as “unreal”.

A Twitter responder wrote: “It seems unreal to me but a man dressed as an old lady got out of a wheelchair and tried to break the protective glass of the Mona Lisa.

“He then smeared cakes on the glass and threw roses around himself before being overpowered by security.”

Another video shared on social media showed the same employee finishing cleaning the pane while another attendant removed a wheelchair in front of the Da Vinci masterpiece.

“Think of the earth, people are destroying the earth,” the wig-clad man said in another video post in French.

“All artists think about the earth. That’s why I did it.”

It showed him being taken away from the Paris gallery in a wheelchair by security forces, suggesting that the incident had an environmental motive.

The protester added: “Think of the planet.”

A museum source said security “managed the situation” without damaging the painting, which is believed to be priceless.

La Joconde – as the Mona Lisa is known in France – was bought by King Francis I of France just before the death of the Italian Leonardo da Vinci in 1519.

It became famous around the world in 1911 after it was stolen from the Louvre.

Three Italian workers hid in a storeroom at the Louvre and took the small painting (77cm x 53cm) off a wall before smuggling it out with ease. It was finally returned in 1914.

The oil-on-wood painting of a Florentine woman is now visited by up to 90 million people every year.
