Monarchy protest in Brighton at the proclamation of King Charles

A protester at the proclamation of King Charles III. in Brighton called for the abolition of the monarchy.

The single protester was at the Brighton Pavilion event with a cardboard sign that read ‘Abolish the Monarchy’ when the event took place.

The protest comes just days after the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday September 8th.

Meanwhile, two people arrested in Edinburgh during the accession proclamation for the new king have been charged.

Scottish Police said a 22-year-old woman was charged after being arrested outside St Giles’s Cathedral and is due to appear in Edinburgh Sheriff Court at a later date.

A 74-year-old man arrested in connection with a breach of the peace near the Palace of Holyroodhouse has also been charged and will appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday.

A spokesman for the force said: “A 22-year-old woman was arrested outside St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh on Sunday 11 September in connection with a breach of the peace.

“She was charged and released on a promise to appear before Edinburgh Sheriff Court at a later date.”

Minutes before the announcement of the proclamation began in Edinburgh, a protester appeared at Mercat Cross holding up a sign that read: “Fuck imperialism, abolish the monarchy.”

Police Scotland later confirmed the protester had been arrested.

A spokesman for the force added: “A 74-year-old man was arrested around 3.50pm on Sunday 11 September near Holyroodhouse Palace in connection with a breach of the peace. He was later charged and is due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday 12 September.”
