Monty Python inspired Elon Musk’s idea of ”charging for insults and arguments”.

Elon Musk says he took inspiration from Monty Python because he “took insults and arguments into account” while his decisions as Twitter’s new boss continued.

The tech billionaire, which completed its acquisition of the platform last week, is reportedly planning to charge verified users for keeping their blue tick.

Following outrage over the reported proposal, including US horror writer Stephen King, Musk has announced that the fee will be $8 (£4.30), rather than the $20 (£17) originally proposed.

In a tweet Tuesday, he wrote, “To all complainers, please keep complaining, but it will cost $8.”

In a subsequent tweet, he shared a link to a sketch by the British sketch group titled Argument.

The well-known skit features a character, played by Michael Pali, who becomes angry after paying for a five-minute argument with John Cleese.

“I totally stole the idea of charging insults and arguments from Monty Python tbh,” Musk wrote.

In response to the initial news that users would be charged for their verified status, King wrote, “$20 a month to keep my blue check?

“Fuck it, they should pay me. If that rolls out, I’ll be gone like Enron.”

Musk directly responded to the author’s response: “We’ve gotta pay the bills somehow! Twitter cannot rely entirely on advertisers. How about $8?”.

According to multiple reports in the US, users have 90 days to opt-in or lose their blue tick if the plans to charge for verification go ahead.

Twitter hasn’t commented on the plans, but Mr Musk responded to questions from users on the platform about verification by saying that “the whole verification process is being overhauled”.

The verification system is currently designed to help users identify authentic and influential users on the platform, including government officials, sports stars, entertainment personalities, journalists, and major brands and organizations.
