More couples focusing on sustainable options for their big day

The wedding march from white to green has begun in earnest. Increased climate awareness has transformed the way couples plan their big day, affecting everything from decor to tableware.

Climate-conscious couples are embracing sustainability like never before, while rejecting less-environmentally friendly wedding traditions.

“Gone are the days of excess and waste as today’s brides and grooms become more conscious of reducing their environmental impact when it comes to celebrating their big day,” said Michelle Wells, events manager at one leading hotel group.

“From menu planning, where locally sourced food is a key consideration, to conducting the wedding at the hotel to reduce the need for transport, the demand for more sustainable options continues to grow,” says Ms Wells of the five-star Hotel Culloden Estate and Spa, County Antrim.

When it comes to the specifics, Ms Wells says the traditional tiered cake, which was once a wedding staple, is no longer a must. In further attempts to minimize waste, requests for cupcake tiers have increased.

“Tall tree centerpieces and artificial flowers that can be repurposed or reused are becoming increasingly popular. In recent years, recycled options like glass bottles for vases and wooden pallets for welcome signs have been used.

“Wildflowers are used for both table settings and bridal bouquets, and confetti is replaced with the biodegradable option of dried flower petals.”

Katie Jackson, events manager at another Hastings Hotels group property – Ballygally Castle in Co. Antrim – agrees with Ms Wells as she summarizes the more environmentally conscious choices of couples celebrating their big day at Ballygally Castle.

“More questions about the food and where it came from, digital invitations are replacing printed invitations, favors are more sustainable, and many are looking to find ways to reduce transportation and car use by having everything in one place.” More couples focusing on sustainable options for their big day
