119 employees at RTÉ earned more than 100,000 euros in base salary last year.
This is according to new figures released by RTÉ, which show that of the 119 employees, 22 earned between 150,000 and 250,000 euros.
The remaining 97 earned between 100,000 and 150,000 euros.
Crucially, the figures do not include RTÉ’s top earners, including individuals such as Ryan Tubridy, Joe Duffy and Ray D’Arcy, as they are not RTÉ employees but independent contractors and are paid through companies they set up.
The latest figures available show that in 2019 Ryan Tubridy received €495,000 followed by Ray D’Arcy who received €450,000 while Joe Duffy’s company received €392,494.
One of 22 RTÉ employees in the €150,000-250,000 income bracket in 2021 is RTÉ Director General Dee Forbes.
In 2021, Ms. Forbes had a base salary of €225,000 and also a car allowance of €25,000, which together with pension contributions of €56,000 brought Ms. Forbes’ total package to €306,000.
Ms. Forbes did not receive any performance-related pay in 2021 and 2020, and a note accompanying the 2021 annual report stated, “As part of cost-cutting initiatives prior to the onset of the global pandemic, senior management had agreed to a pay cut of 10 pieces.”
The 119 RTÉ employees who earned over €100,000 last year are two more than the 117 in that income bracket for 2020.
Last year, another 179 RTÉ employees earned between €80,000 and €100,000, and the new figures show that the average salary at RTÉ last year totaled €60,686 – down €67 from the average salary of €60,753 in 2020.
RTÉ figures show that 550 RTÉ employees earned between €60,000 and €80,000, with the largest cohort of 740 earning between €40,000 and €60,000.
Another 283 earned salaries between “€0 and €40,000”.
During the year under review, RTÉ employees voted overwhelmingly against a management proposal for pay cuts of between 3.5 percent and 5.35 percent for every employee earning more than 40,000 euros.
A spokesman for RTÉ said on Monday: “The average salary at RTÉ in 2021 has decreased compared to 2020. Changes in salary bands are the result of normal annual movements across the organization, including retirements.”
RTÉ’s release of pay grades follows the channel’s annual report, which shows RTÉ’s numbers have increased by five over the past year, from 1,866 to 1,871.
The broadcaster’s payroll slip fell slightly last year from EUR 122.75 million to EUR 121.84 million.
