More than 1,500 homes and businesses across Ireland were without power on Sunday morning after torrential rain and overnight thunderstorms.
Much of the heavier rain was concentrated on the east coast, but power outages were also confirmed in Kerry, Mayo, Cavan, Monaghan and Roscommon.
Up to 50mm of rain was forecast for some areas from 4am to 8am as an orange weather warning went into effect for 13 counties.
The biggest power outage yet to be resolved is in Inchicore, Dublin, where over 600 homes and businesses are still without power. ESB has been working all morning fixing dozens of bugs.
The worst of the weather has now pushed north over Ireland but Met Éireann again forecast possible thunder and lightning on Sunday night.
“It will be mainly dry for most of Sunday with good sunshine, but rain will develop in the south-west in the early evening and spread north across the southern half of the country by nightfall.
“It will be difficult at times, with spot flooding possible in places. Highs of 16 to 20 degrees with moderate south to south east winds freshening in the south,” Met Éireann said.
Persistent rain will spread across the country and be heavy at times, with spot flooding possible Sunday night before clearing north with clear spells and scattered showers. Sunday night will see lows of 9-12 degrees.
Monday also begins mainly dry with sunny spells before rain sweeps across the country from the southwest in the early afternoon and gradually spreads north for the remainder of the day.
“It will be difficult at times, with spot flooding possible. Maximum temperatures of 17 to 21 degrees with fresh south-east winds,” Met Éireann said.
It is set to remain very unsettled over the next week and the national weather forecaster said it is likely we will see more outbreaks of heavy rain.
Tuesday will see a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers before extended rainy spells later in the day. Wednesday is expected to be similarly choppy and unlikely to change as low pressures will continue to dominate until the end of next week.
