More than 2,800 bus drivers in Dublin vote on a cost-of-living package worth more than €7,000 each


More than 2,800 bus drivers in Dublin are facing pay rises worth more than €7,000 each to lower the cost of living.

They will vote next week on a proposed wage increase of 15.5 percent over five years.

Your unions – Siptu and the National Bus and Railworkers Union (NBRU) – have made no recommendation.

Sources described this as the best that could be achieved through the industrial relations process.

If accepted, the proposed deal means the average driver working five days a week will receive a total increase of more than €7,000 through January 2025, as the initial pay rises will apply retrospectively.

Her base salary, currently €44,699, will increase to €49,087 by January next year and €52,077 by January 1, 2025.

The proposed package is backdated to 2019, meaning much of it will be prepaid.

A total of 9.5 percent will be paid out by next January 1, and the full award will be paid out in wage packages in less than two and a half years. The court recommended a lump sum of 1,000 euros for the years 2019 and 2020.

This would be followed by increases worth 3 percent for last year and 3.5 percent in July this year. Thereafter, there would be 3 percent increases in January each year through January 2025.

The details of the deal are likely to be closely watched by public and private sector unions, who are in talks with employers about raising the cost of living as inflation rises.

The government and main employers’ group Ibec have warned that employers cannot chase inflation.

In a note to bus drivers in Dublin, Siptu and the NBRU said they had distributed details of the package the Labor Court recommended to members. The statement said senior union officials had called for a breakdown of the wage claim.

“The cumulative increase for a five-over-seven-day driver as of January 2023 (less than six months) is approximately €84.40 per week, or a total of approximately €4,390 per year, which equates to a current base rate of €44,699.72 to around €49,087,” the statement said.

“The cumulative increase for a 5/7 driver in January 2025 will be approximately
€141.90 per week, i.e. €52,077 annual salary.”

Drivers who work a five-day-a-week shift system are the largest group of drivers in the company.

Wages for drivers working between Monday and Friday will rise from €42,284 to €49,263 and from €38,055 to €44,366 for drivers working four days a week.

The premium payment on Sundays and public holidays remains the same.

The unions had requested increases worth 19 percent. This consisted of retrospective increases worth 2 percent for 2019 and 2020, and a 3.75 percent annual increase from last year through 2024.

Dublin Bus offered 11 and sought efficiency gains.

The vote on the Dublin bus deal comes after more than 4,000 workers at Iarnród Éireann voted in favor of a 10.5 per cent pay rise over five years.

Chief Executive Jim Meade said the “groundbreaking” five-year wage agreement, which would run until 2027, would underpin a new era of industrial relations at Iarnród Éireann.

“It is an agreement that was negotiated directly, without intermediaries or the intervention of the state’s industrial relations machinery, and without resentment and conflict,” he said.

The wage agreement received 75 percent support from members of NBRU, Siptu, TSSA and Connect.

Employees will get 3.5 percent this year, 2.5 percent next year, and a 1.5 percent annual cost of living increase for 2024, 2025, and 2026.
