More than 950 dogs take part in the Saltdean Lido swimming competition

A LIDO’s annual dog swim event attracted more than 950 pooches in a single weekend.

Saltdean Lido hosts hundreds of people with their dogs every September at the end of the bathing season.

The lido has five different sessions a day on the weekends in September, where dogs can splash around in the 80-year-old pool.

It is the most popular event on the Saltdean Lido calendar and provides important funds for the restoration of the 1938 Art Deco building which is currently undergoing restoration.

Julie Shepherd, who organizes the event each year, said: “The dogs are our biggest fundraiser of the year, it’s always very busy. We had more than 950 dogs last weekend.

“They come from everywhere, it’s amazing.

“I met two people waiting outside coming with their hairy Newfoundlands, they got the 5 o’clock ferry from the Isle of Wight to come.

“People come to the events from Manchester, Sheffield, Cardiff, Bristol and Cambridge.

“This is the sixth year we’ve done it, we’re doing it at the end of the human season.”

It’s £8 for dogs, plus £8 if you want to swim with them, or £3 if you’re watching.

The meetings last one and a half hours.

There are different sessions that people can choose for large and small dogs.

Julie added: “The feedback is great, we tell people ‘see you next year’ when they leave and they tell us they’ll be back next weekend. That happens quite often.
