An idiot who dialed 999 to complain about a delay in takeaway pizza has been beaten up by police.
The pizza dork called the life-or-death emergency number and groaned: “I’m getting hungry and waiting for my food but they said it was delayed by half an hour,” Essex Police said.
Another time waster called the police to ask officers to say his watch had stopped.
Both pointless calls came on Sunday, June 5, as the force grappled with the usual weekend hiccups and the added task of ensuring the anniversary celebrations ran smoothly.
Another dope dialed 999 – to ask who to call because he “didn’t have an emergency”.
Chief Superintendent Stuart Hooper, head of contact management for Essex Police, said: “Our staff who take 999 calls work tirelessly every day to ensure we get you the help you need and to ensure that ours is met Officials are where they are most needed.
“However, we are seeing an increasing number of calls to 999 for matters that do not require emergency response.
“We want to help everyone, but the moments we need to take a 999 call for something that isn’t an emergency, it could mean somewhere else that needs us really fast is waiting to come through.
“If you need us but it is not an emergency please consider using our website which is full of useful information that may be helpful and use our online reporting or live chat Functions to report crimes or give us information and you can also call 101.
“Anyone who needs our help will get it, but we need you to help us help you using the most appropriate contact method.
“Calling 999 must be a last resort and you should only use this service when reporting an emergency that requires an immediate and urgent police response.
“I would like to thank the people who contacted us yesterday through the channel that was most appropriate for their call.
“By doing so, you free up our call agents to respond almost immediately to people who are in a real emergency and need to dial 999.”
