A LIBRARY is downsized as part of a planned mall renovation.
Supermarket Morrisons plans to redevelop the Meridian Center in Peacehaven by moving the 970m² library to a 300m² lot in the newly developed centre.
A planning application for the development of the project will be submitted to Lewes District Council after a consultation period for residents.
The city council originally proposed a temporary move for the library to a 39-square-foot space at the Joff Youth Center next door.
This proposal sparked a campaign to retain current library services as residents raised concerns about the accessibility and quality of facilities available at the library and youth center.

Planning permission for this temporary move is pending for any date prior to December 2025 and may still be possible while the demolition and redevelopment of the Meridian Center takes place.
The plans are expected to create 390 jobs with a “new, vibrant Peacehaven town center including a range of commercial, retail and community facilities – anchored by a brand new Morrisons supermarket”, according to Peacehaven Town Council.
East Saltdean and Telscombe Borough Councilor and Telscombe Councilor Laurence O’Connor said: “The current population of Peacehaven and Telscombe would indicate a reasonable need for a 600 to 700m² library and the Act requires proposals for new library construction to take account of that predicted demographic change.”
Peacehaven and Telscombe Library Friends, the group working to preserve current library facilities, said other East Sussex towns had much more generous library space than Morrisons suggests.
Lewes has a population of 17,800 and has 650m² of library space. Rye, 9,100 inhabitants, has 450 square meters, as does Battle with 5,600 inhabitants. Peacehaven and Telscombe have a population of 23,500, so the proposed 300m² library space is much smaller.
