Up to 40 people are feared trapped in an inferno that erupted in a 10-story building in Moscow.

A team of around 200 firefighters is on site trying to save the lives of those trapped in the building.

A total of 120 people have so far been rescued from the burning building into the fleet of around 15 ambulances waiting outside.

The fire is believed to have started on the first floor before spreading to the fourth. The flames are feared to block emergency exits.

Vladimir Putin’s newly appointed Minister of Emergencies, Major General Alexander Kurenkov – his former bodyguard – rushed to the scene to take over fighting the inferno.

He said, “The search for individuals continues.”

The Ministry of Disaster Management added: “The fire area is 1,000 square meters according to the first information.

“There are 180 firefighters on site.”

As the fire raged, nearby roads were closed to the public.

It is the latest in an unusual spate of Russian fires, some believed to be arson and possibly linked to the war with Ukraine.

A concerned local resident tweeted: “Have fires always been this common in Russia or are we just more aware now?”
