Mother and young son who died in apparent murder-suicide may have been dead for several days

A tragic mother and her seven-month-old boy may have been dead at their home since Thursday before their bodies were discovered Saturday afternoon.

They were known locally tonight as Kate Donohoe, who was in her 40s, and her baby son Vincent.

Gardaí are working on the theory that the shocking incident is a murder-suicide after a note was discovered at the scene of a house in Clonee on the West Dublin-Co Meath border.

The property remained cordoned off yesterday as Gardaí conducted a technical survey of the home.

Toxicology tests are being conducted to determine the cause of death.

“The woman was unavailable for at least 24 hours before her body was discovered by emergency services in an upstairs room of her home,” a source said Irish Independent.

Their bodies were discovered by concerned neighbors who had been contacted by people close to Ms Donohoe who had concerns for their well-being.

An 911 call was made and ambulances rushed to the scene before gardaí were called to the home at Beechfield Court, Clonee, which was immediately declared the scene of the crime.

Officials are not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths and an autopsy was performed on the bodies yesterday afternoon.

Initial clues were that Ms Donohoe died of an apparent heart attack.

After analyzing the note discovered at the scene, investigating Gardai are working on the theory that the tragedy was “pre-planned”.

“This incident was not a spontaneous affair,” said a senior source.

Ms. Donohoe was described as a dog lover, animal welfare advocate and a respected woman whom Gardaí had never taken notice of.

A tribute was paid to her on social media.

One woman said: “So sad I’m still in shock. This world was a better place with Kate in it,” while a friend separately pointed out that “she was always generous with her time” and had an “infectious laugh.”

Another wrote: “I knew her to be so kind and generous with her knowledge and time. A great loss for this world.”

“A wonderful, kind, compassionate person has left us. Many dog people will know Kate, she gave her time and love to dogs especially greyhounds, she shared her joy and love with everyone, an absolutely wonderful person. I will miss our conversations and our laughter beyond sad.

“I can’t believe she’s gone, the world will be a completely empty place without her,” one woman wrote.

The local coroner and state pathologist’s office have been notified. A Garda family liaison officer has been appointed to the case.

A Garda spokesman said: “Just after 3pm on Saturday, Gardaí and emergency services visited a home in the Beechfield area. An adult woman and a young boy were found dead inside the home.” Mother and young son who died in apparent murder-suicide may have been dead for several days
