Woman wakes up with amnesia 20 years after catching a cold

A mother-of-two who woke up with amnesia 20 years after catching a cold has revealed her terrifying experience during an appearance on the internet. Channel No. 4 Steph’s packed lunch.

Freelance journalist Claire Reece appeared on the daytime show with her husband Scott Reece and described the cold she’s caught on her youngest son, which then got “worse” ” for two weeks.

Then, on Father’s Day morning, Scott said he couldn’t wake Claire and she was taken to the hospital to be on a ventilator.

Eventually, Claire was transferred to the Royal London Hospital, where her condition was diagnosed as encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain caused by an infection or autoimmune reaction.

When she awoke, Claire said she had been suffering from a series of hallucinations, including thinking that Genesis’ killer Phil Collins was her cousin.

She told Channel 4 host Steph McGovern: “I’m not in the best shape. At one stage, I told Scott he had to go home and get me a dress because Darren Day was performing in the hospital.

“I thought there were wasps on the ceiling – that’s kind of weird, but part of getting out of a ventilator.”

When she started talking to her husband Scott at the time, he learned that Claire had suffered from amnesia when she started asking about a pet cat that had been knocked down years ago.

He then has the gruesome task of explaining to Claire that several family members have died, deaths that she has forgotten, and so must grieve all over again.

While Claire can remember meeting her husband, she said: “I can’t remember how he proposed, got married, got pregnant, had our baby, any vacations with friends, all all disappeared.

“The same goes for events like 9/11, the lockdown, Covid,” she said, and then joked: “Luckily, I forgot all about homeschooling, because I didn’t. thought I would like that.”

Host Steph replied: “We can laugh about it, but it has to be something really scary for you.”

Claire replied: “It was horrible. I won’t lie. You get people constantly telling you, ‘Do you remember when?’ I think now people remember not to say that to me, because it’s sad. I can see it’s me in the picture but I don’t remember being there.”

She said neuroscientists have told her she should have regained her memories at this stage in her recovery, but is now only getting “pings” when remembering certain numbers. certain thing.

Husband Scott said: “Having her around is the main thing and we can always make new memories.

“We would often sit down and go through the films and partial pictures to see if the memory would come back and also so she could relive it.”

While Claire says her short-term memory is still “poor”, forcing her to rely on constant lists, she recently returned to her work as an entertainment journalist.

She added that she was even told that she interviewed Steph’s Packed Lunch host Denise Van Outen, who was in the studio.

Denise admitted she couldn’t remember the interviews, replying: “Really? Oh.” She then joked, “How could you forget me?”
