DRIVERS face a £100 fine if they stop or park in specific places under new Highway Code rules.

Motorists are advised to hit changes introduced in January to avoid detection.

Updated Rule 243, effective January 29, specifies places where vehicles can and cannot wait or park.

The no-go list includes places near schools, bends and places where curbs have been lowered to accommodate wheelchair users.

Anyone who doesn’t follow the new rules will face a £100 fine – unless they are forced to stop by stopped traffic.

The full list of places where motorists cannot stop or park includes:

  • Near the school gate
  • Wherever you prevent access to emergency services
  • At or near a bus, tram stop or taxi rating
  • On the way to a crosswalk/tramway.
  • Opposite or within 10 meters (32ft) of the intersection, except in an authorized parking lot
  • Near the foot of a hill or a bridge with a hump
  • Facing a traffic island or (if this interferes) another parked vehicle
  • Where you force other traffic into the tram lane
  • Where the curb has been lowered to accommodate wheelchairs and assisted mobility
  • In front of the entrance to a property
  • On a bend
  • Where you interfere with a cyclist’s use of the vehicle, except when forced to do so by static traffic

The updates are part of a series of reforms aimed at improving the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians.

It has changed hierarchy of road userswith the most vulnerable at the top because they are at greater risk in the event of an accident.

The full hierarchy of road users is:

  1. Walker
  2. Biker
  3. Horse rider
  4. Motorcyclists
  5. Car / taxi
  6. Truck/minibus
  7. Larger vehicles like HGVs and buses

Also among those changes are Drivers of cars must now give way to passers-by or waiting to cross the junction.

And biker should make them as visible as possible by go between their lanes.
