According to the Mail on Sunday, “workplace parking levels” are being reviewed in towns and cities across England to cut congestion.

In Nottingham, where the plan was implemented, more than half of the costs are said to have been passed on to staff.

Council bosses say they can reduce traffic and pollution, and boost financing for other projects.

But the AA has referred to these proposals as “a poll tax on wheels”.

The auto association warned the charges would “hit workers’ pay packages”.

The RAC says the cost is the equivalent of a “tax to work,” while other engine groups point out that companies’ parking lots are effectively taxed at the business tax rate because of the value they add. ground.

Plans are now said to be under consideration for Birmingham, Brighton, Warrington, Bath, Luton, Norwich, Colchester, Cambridge, Leicester, Oxford, Bristol and the London boroughs of Hounslow and Camden.

Cambridge and Hounslow can charge the highest fees – up to £1,000, according to the report.

Meanwhile, Leicester City Council is said to be considering a £500 fee, and Bristol a £400 fee.

An AA spokesman said: “The tax is really just a poll tax hitting the wheel that doesn’t just attack workers’ pay packages, while trying to blame the users. labor, but also hit the lowest paid.”

A report by the Greater Cambridge Partnership says charging £1,000 per space could generate £13 million a year.
