Movie Review: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

The Marvel films are now “largely indistinguishable blobs of digital gloop,” Robbie Collin said in The Daily Telegraph, but if you like seeing a ton of branded characters “joking, arguing, and moping while pretending to fly around shooting fireballs,” this movie should tick all the boxes. Benedict Cumberbatch plays Doctor Strange, a surgeon-turned-wizard who first appeared in the franchise in 2016. In this part, he gets into an argument with Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen), an embittered witch who uses a book full of evil spells to wreak havoc. One of the key points of the film is that it is directed by Sam Raimi, the maestro behind it evil Dead Trilogy and Tobey Maguire Spiderman films; but while there are characteristic Raimi flourishes — including “a lot of demonic howling” — he’s stuck to the franchise’s “fussy restrictive rules.” The result is a superficial film made in Marvel’s ubiquitous “house style, sprinkled with Raimi flavor.”

Raimi wasn’t just wasted on that, Tom Shine said The Sunday Times, but also Olsen, “a fine actress who once took a single step into the Marvel Verse” and now “seems unable to get out of it.” This film contains little more than “long stretches of semi-intelligible narrative” interspersed with “glittering props.” As for the storyline where Doctor Strange appears in different realities, it appears to be “modeled after a plate of seafood linguine”.

“Well, I quite enjoyed the film,” Libby Purves said in the Daily Mail. Yes, it’s Marvel on Amphetamines, crammed with “cultural references from every century, religion, and Saturday matinee cliches,” but it’s also “massively entertaining” — even if, like me, “gave up on superhero movies 50 years ago.” .
