Movie Review: Phantom of the Open

If the story at the heart of this “hilarious and good-natured” comedy weren’t factual, “no one would believe it,” said Deborah Ross in The audience. Mark Rylance plays Maurice Flitcroft, the Barrow-in-Furness shipyard crane operator who “started playing golf at 46 after seeing it on TV” and played the 1976 British Open. His score of 121 in the first round of qualifying was the worst in major championship history; yet he then managed to “sneak his way into more opens,” much to the ire of the “snobbish” golf establishment. Written by Simon Farnaby who was co-author paddington 2this is a classic British underdog film in last month’s shape The Duke. Although it “rolls off in Hallmark Schmaltz” at the end, there are “delicious moments” along the way, like when Maurice’s wife (Sally Hawkins) lists his disability as “false teeth and lumbago” and when a regional news program invites him live into the studio putt – and he misses every shot.

“Oh god,” you might be thinking – “not another lovable British loser!” And it’s true, we’ve been here many times, Charlotte O’Sullivan said in the London evening standard; but the film is “superbly acted” and its slapstick “made me cry with laughter”. I’m afraid it drove me “a little crazy,” Matthew Bond said in The Post on Sunday. Some movies try “a little too much to make you like them,” and this “low-brow” comedy falls into that trap. It doesn’t help that Rylance seems to have cobbled together the role from parts he’s already played; there’s a good dose of BFG in the mix, and the finished item is “sort of Cumbrian Forrest Gump”. Still, this is a fun film that will charm people with an understandable craving for “something easy.”
