Movie Review: Red Rocket | The week Great Britain

Sean Baker has long used his films (Tangerine, the Florida project) to “uncover the dark side of American life,” Brian Viner said in the Daily Mail, but with his racy new he ventures “deeper than the underbelly”. Simon Rex plays Mikey, a “well-endowed but washed-out” porn actor who returns to his working-class home in Texas, just as the 2016 US presidential campaign begins, to be at the mercy of his estranged wife (Bree Elrod). Unable to find a job, he turns to drug dealing instead. Along the way, he charms a “pretty teenage girl” at the local donut hole outlet, hoping she’ll be his ticket back into the porn industry. “Dodgy as it sounds,” the film is made with “enormous heart and humor” and brings an “almost painterly look” at “the kind of America that Norman Rockwell certainly never portrayed.” As in Baker’s other films, the leads are all “relative unknowns,” giving a welcome “documentary feel”; Rex in particular, who was a porn actor for a short time years ago, is “a revelation”.

The film is intended to be part comedy, Bryan Appleyard said in The audience, but it’s a pity that it’s too long and not very funny. Ultimately, it’s just another example of the now ubiquitous “new American style noir,” with a hero who’s little more than a “villain” surrounded by “nasty guys” hanging around in an America you think of as “Impoverished Wasteland” introduces. . Ryan Gilbey said he was unsympathetically chauvinistic New statesman; and unlike Michael Caine’s Alfie, for example, Mikey doesn’t develop as a character, and Red Rocket suffers from it. “A donut can get by with a hole in the middle,” but “films without a center struggle.”
