One MP said it was a “privilege” that King Charles III. to offer his condolences in person when he met him this week.
Hove MP Peter Kyle met the king at Hillsborough Castle on Tuesday while he was visiting Ireland.
Mr Kyle has been Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland since 2021 and said the King’s visit was “important” for Ireland.
“It was an honor to meet King Charles at a reception at Hillsborough Castle,” he said.
“It was a privilege to personally offer His Majesty my condolences and my sincere best wishes for the future.
“The King’s visit to Northern Ireland was important. With thousands of people taking to the streets of Royal Hillsborough and Belfast, it was heartwarming to see the excitement his visit caused.”
During the visit, King Charles III vowed to seek “the welfare” of all people in Northern Ireland and described how his family felt their “sorrow” as the Queen’s peace efforts were praised.
Charles, who made a pilgrimage to the site of his great-uncle Lord Mountbatten’s assassination in an IRA bombing in 2015, said the Queen “never stopped praying for the best of times for this place and its people”.
Speaking at Hillsborough Castle in County Down, the royal residence in Northern Ireland, the new monarch said the late Queen was aware of her position in bringing together divided communities “that history had divided”.
And during a memorial service in Belfast honoring the Queen, Charles continued his mother’s gentle diplomacy when, for the first time in his role as king, he met another head of state and shook hands with the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins.
Thousands of people lined the streets of Belfast to catch a glimpse of the King and Queen.
People began to gather early in the morning, hoping to get the best vantage point behind the metal railings along the downtown route.
As the royal couple passed Wellington Place, Donegall Square North, Chichester Street and Victoria Street in the royal cavalcade to loud cheers and applause, the crowd was as deep as 10 in places.
People described the atmosphere as “emotional,” “cheerful,” and “full of excitement.”
Many people held their phones over the crowd to capture the historic moment.
