Mr Jamala, former Ukraine winner, says UK Eurovision will be ‘greatest’

Ukraine’s Eurovision winner Jamala has said that next year’s song contest, scheduled to be held in the UK, will be “the biggest Eurovision”.

Jamala won Eurovision in 2016 with her song 1944 and said the UK was “the best place in the world” to host the competition, although admitting for the first time she hoped Ukraine would could host after the Kalush Orchestra’s victory in Turin.

“For me, (the UK) is the best place in the world for music,” she told PA news agency.

“That’s why Eurovision in your country is the best place for me – you are about music, you have all kinds of different styles and genres.

“And I think that will be the biggest Eurovision.”

Jamala initially hoped that Ukraine could win the war and would “have time to prepare” for Eurovision, but she understood it had to be in “a safe place for its participants and spectators.” .

She said her song Thank You, Stranger was partly inspired by the music of The Beatles and aims to show Ukraine grateful for the global support and millions of donations the country has received. after months of “life-changing” conflict.

“How is it possible that in the 21st century, in front of the whole world, (our) neighbor starts killing us?” she speaks.

“As a mother of two young sons, a singer, and an activist, it is important to be a part of this fight for the right to live in her home.

“Why are we forced to leave home? Why? It’s not fair.

“It’s really important not to forget that every minute we lose people in my country.”

Using authentic footage, an accompanying video for the only footage recalls moments from the start of the war, the journey of Ukrainian refugees to neighboring countries, the hospitality of the locals and life in new circumstances.

She added that the song can say what words cannot.

“Music can say and can do a lot these days,” she said.

“It is even more powerful than words.

“It represents our deep gratitude to the incredible millions of people who have sheltered and supported the Ukrainian people.”

Birmingham, Glasgow and Leeds are among the seven cities shortlisted to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 on behalf of Ukraine.

They will battle alongside Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield in the next stage of the bidding process to host the 67th Eurovision Song Contest.
