There’s nothing worse than doing laundry, only to have your towels smell damp.
But the cleaning fan has come up with a great way to get rid of that musty smell, and it only costs 29 minutes.
One woman joined the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips group on Facebook to ask what other people use to get rid of odors on their towels.
“How do you remove the smell of dampness from towels?” she writes.
“I wash them with various fabric softeners but the smell is still there. I was thinking of getting rid of them unless anyone has any advice to save them.”
Hinchers – the name given to fans of Ms. Hinch – the cleaning expert – was quick to respond, with many offering similar advice.
“Wash in white vinegar instead of fabric softener,” one person replied.
And another agreed, writing: “Okay, don’t use fabric softener, use white vinegar and I also put a small cap of Zoflora in the laundry detergent, it smells great.”
A third added: “The white vinegar is completely gone, completely eliminating odors that you can smell. “Super easy trick, great product.”
And given that a bottle of white vinegar starts at as little as 29p in supermarkets, hacking is a cheap and easy affair.
Towels can smell damp if they have mold – this is often the case if they are kept in a humid environment like the bathroom – and vinegar contains acetic acid, which can help eliminate odors.
To avoid damp smells, it’s best to dry towels on a radiator or towel rack after use, to make sure they don’t stay wet for too long.
