MS: “When you get this diagnosis as a young family, the world changes. It takes time to accommodate, but we did.

Mary Phelan and her husband Willie were happily married with two young children under the age of three when they received a shock diagnosis. Willie’s legs had given him problems. But when he sought medical help, he learned he had multiple sclerosis. The diagnosis meant that he had to stop working as a bus driver immediately.

The kids, Liam and Eilish, were very young at the time (three and two),” says Mary. “When you get this diagnosis as a young family, the world changes. All you hear is wheelchair, job gone… It was huge back then. We had moved, I had changed jobs as a teacher around the same time, so all the major life stressors came on at once.”
