A mother claims she has increased the value of her home by £60,000 by completing just over £17,000 DIY.

Sarah Berg, 36, a social media influencer from Minnesota, USA, bought the five-bedroom apartment At home for $325,000 (£247,781) in August 2014 with her husband Andy, 26.

The couple were keen to decorate as soon as they moved in and have now transformed the property into an open, modern space.

Some of the changes they’ve made include tearing down walls to create a brand new layout.

They also added new windows that were quoted as $4,000 (£3,049) to install but managed to do themselves for $200 (£152).

“We reframed the window to make it smaller so there are two windows in the kitchen that match,” Sarah sharing her tips Instagram (@savage_diy_mom), Jam Press said.

“We watched YouTube videos to learn how to redesign and install new windows ourselves. We tore down a wall between the kitchen and the formal dining room, as well as the old cabinets and flooring.

“We ordered all our wardrobes from IKEA and assembled them ourselves, which was easy.

“We hired a drywall pro, but would have paid $100,000 if we had hired someone to renovate the entire kitchen.”

In the living room, her husband created custom built-ins himself for $300 (£228), and she recently created an accent wall behind the TV.

She used plywood, a nailer and paint to create the final project, which cost $120 (£91).

For the master bedroom, she originally taped the wall behind the bed, but didn’t like the end product, so she decided to build a wooden shelf above it instead.

She said: “After countless brainstorming sessions, I decided to remove the top part of the overlap, which caused major damage to the wall.

“I used grout from another project to give the wall a pretty cool textured look.

“I built a wooden ledge shelf and painted eight pieces of art [to hang above the bed]. It’s amazing what you can find at thrift stores, just use the frames and repaint the rest!

“The cost of this project was minimal.

“In the children’s bathroom we replaced the old floor covering because we didn’t like it anyway and gutted the whole room.

“I wanted something that would be fun for the kids’ pool – but also something that could grow with them. Needless to say, they have the nicest bathroom in the whole house.

“Gathering ideas, I decided on a horizontal white overlap with a vertical gray overlap and made my own stencil to sponge paint triangles on the wall.

“I also built my own floating shelves, which I had never done before. For the stairs, I started by sanding for eight hours.

“I washed the steps and then pre-stained the wood so it would absorb the stain evenly.

“After that dried I stained and used primer along with white paint on the stair risers.

“I loved how it turned out and if we had hired someone to do it, it would probably have cost us several thousand dollars.”

In total they spent $22,695 (£17,302) remodeling the home and believe they added $80,000 (£60,935) to the property’s value.

Sarah learned the skills to complete the renovation through YouTube, online tutorials, and from other Instagram influencers.
